Katrawan Brocade is only woven in Benares. It is a version of the float weave in silk, gold and silver threads.
During the Mughal period, around 14th century, weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold and silver threads became the specialty of Benares. It is likely that silk brocade weaving started in Benares in the 17th century and attained excellence during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The special characteristics of these saris are Mughal-inspired designs, gold-work, compact- weaving, figures with small details, metallic visualeffects, pallus (edge), jal (a net like pattern), and mina work. The saris are often part of an Indian bride’s trousseau.
When human hands and heart work in tandem, that is grace in the making. Handwoven cloth has beauty and grace that is significant.
